Rules for the Election
Chris StanglDepartment: Political Science I am asking for your vote for APSCUF President. I believe I am prepared for the role, having served as Grievance Chair for four years (2015-2019), and as Vice-President for an additional four years (2021-2025). In my time at West Chester we have had to rally against draconian funding cuts and misguided plans to leave the State System. We’ve had to go on strike. We can’t remain a healthy union without maintaining the willingness to take strong actions when necessary. We have also worked with local Management when beneficial to create partnerships and arrangements that support faculty here at WCU without adversely affecting APSCUF at the state-level. Our work conditions, and the learning environment for our students, are better because of our ability to find common cause with Management. Currently, we are in the midst of a critical period for public higher education, dealing with a number of challenges, even crises. That said, APSCUF has a strong tradition of advocacy for, and support of, faculty, so my “vision” is largely to build on the foundation set by the past presidents under whom I have served. Key to this is realizing that APSCUF has many talented officers and that much of the important work is the product of committees such as Meet & Discuss, Exec, and the Rep Council. Additionally, shared government among the various faculty groups has blossomed in recent years (basically since Covid made it a necessity) and I look forward to continuing to develop these ties. I’ve served in CAPC in the past and am in my fifth year as department chair. I have seen first-hand what cooperation among shared governance units can accomplish. The future is uncertain, but we must face it. We will do best if we don’t forget what has served us well in past times of uncertainly. Should I gain your support I look forward to drawing on the collective knowledge APSCUF has at its disposal—now heightened owing to the affiliation with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT)—to chart our future course.
