Rules for the Election

    • Each college can have at most two representatives on the Council on Undergraduate Research.
    • The election is decided by a plurality of those casting votes unless the number of candidates does not exceed the number of positions to fill. In the later case, each candidate will be voted on by an approve/disapprove ballot.
    • Vacant seats will be filled one at a time with the current vacant seat filled by the candidate with the highest vote count.
    • Each candidate selected counts as a cast vote.
    • Seats with longer terms will be filled first. In the case of an approve/disapprove ballot, candidates will be ranked according to number of approve votes.

Department: Computer Science

I would like to nominate myself to serve as the College of the Sciences and Mathematics Representative on the West Chester University Council on Undergraduate Research (WCU-CUR). As an Associate Professor in Computer Science, I have built much of my teaching and scholarly work around incorporating undergraduates into authentic research early. This is often done through research lab activities and project-based courses that require students to not only carry out the research tasks but also follow proper research procedures, including collecting and examining data, establishing and questioning hypotheses, and maintaining detailed workbooks that would lead to eventual publications. I care about undergraduate research not as an extracurricular activity but as one of the most reliable ways to turn capable students into confident professionals.

In this role, I would help WCU-CUR strengthen the visibility, consistency, and impact of undergraduate research across CSM by collaborating closely with ORSP and aligning our efforts with the University’s research strategic plan. I’m especially interested in practical improvements that make participation easier for both students and faculty, including the followings:

- Clearer pathways into research, including presentation of graduate study as a valid career path.

- Stronger support for beginners, including peer-support through engagement with student organization.
