Timothy J. Brown


Department: Communication Studies

I welcome the opportunity to continue my service to the campus community by being re-elected to CAPC. For the past four years, I have been a member of the undergraduate program committee. I believe my experience as a department chair along with my previous leadership positions on campus (such as being the Co-Chair of the Multicultural Faculty Commission) well position me to be a strong advocate for undergraduate education. If re-elected, I will continue to serve with a commitment to the mission and values of the university. Thank you for your consideration.

Kevin W. Dean


Department: Communication Studies

Dear Colleagues,

I ask your support as I place my name in nomination for election to a term on CAPC for 2010-2012. For over a decade some of the most meaningful “service” I provide the WCU has come through this body and I welcome the opportunity to continue this work. As the current CAPC Chair, and having served for several years on the Executive Committee, I am proud of the role I played in helping streamline the CAPC deliberative process. Through our by-law revisions, this critical campus governance body is more efficient, transparent and---particularly through sub-committees---more inclusive of campus participation than ever before. Our commitment to celebrate excellence in teaching---as evidenced by our “best practices” that start most meetings--- provides a wonderful forum, showcasing faculty talent and commitment to pedagogy, something that is far to lacking on the campus.

These coming years will bring the Middle States review and the beginning of our new president’s efforts to roll out his vision for the campus in ways that are bound to impact academic affairs. I would be honored to continue my service, advocating the essential message of faculty ownership of curriculum and faculty leadership in academic policy. Thanks for your consideration.

Karen Fitts


Department: English

Since joining the WCU faculty in 2000, I have been an active participant in my department’s curriculum revisions at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I also have held key English department posts such as director of the writing center, co-director of the composition program, and director of the graduate program. In addition to serving as an APSCUF union delegate, I have been a member of the CAPC sub-committee for writing emphasis, SaLe, the Academic Recognition Committee, the Council of Graduate Coordinators, and the CAS Student Recognition Committee. As a result of the experience and knowledge of WCU I have gained in these and other leadership positions, I believe that I have constructive contributions to make to CAPC, and I ask for your vote.

Judith Greenamyer


Department: Biology

I have served on CAPC for several years, and would like to continue to do so. In addition to my CAPC experience, I bring experience as a graduate coordinator and as a former department Chair to the proceedings. I have also served on university wide committees, including a Middle States Working Group this year. I believe that this university wide experience gives me a broad view of the university needs, and helps in making decisions in CAPC.

Wayne Hanley


Department: History

Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege to serve two terms (non-consecutive) on CAPC. I have an abiding interest in curriculum and in helping faculty members develop courses that ensure the curriculum and programs at WCU maintain the highest of standards. Currently I serve on CAPC’s General Education committee and the interdisciplinary sub-committee. I have found this work to be both informative and rewarding, and I would welcome the opportunity to continue that work.

Susan L. Johnston


Department: Anthropology & Sociology

I have served one term on CAPC, including work with the Program Review Committee. Both of these experiences have been rewarding and enjoyable, and I would very much welcome the opportunity to continue this service. My commitment to and experience with curriculum has woven through my entire academic career, and has included significant department- and college-level involvements in both creating and reviewing curricula at this and a prior institution.

Helen Schroepfer


Department: Philosophy

I am very excited about the opportunity to continue my service on CAPC! I am in my fifth year in the philosophy department, and putting together my tenure and promotion application confirmed that a great deal of my energy has gone into creating a curriculum that responds to current issues and student needs, and I would like to continue this focus on CAPC. I have updated our religious studies curriculum to be more interdisciplinary and more responsive to the needs of our students, have collaborated on the design of four new courses that have been approved by CAPC, with yet another in the works. In conjunction with my current CAPC tenure, I have served on the Graduate Studies Committee, service which dovetails nicely with my work as our department’s Graduate Studies Coordinator. In addition to serving on a number of department committees, I am also currently serving on the Women’s Studies Steering Committee, the CAS Recruitment Committee, and the Student Research Awards Committee.

Paul R Wolfson


Department: Mathematics

I have been on CAPC for several terms and am currently Vice Chair of CAPC. During my years on CAPC I have served on many of its subcommittees, for the last several years on the General Education Subcommittee. For the last two years I have also chaired the Writing Emphasis Committee. I believe that my experience will be useful in the coming years, when we may expect to face a barrage of assaults on the integrity of our programs. I ask for your vote so that I may try to defend them.
